It is wonderful to find a place where you feel comfortable, a place that suits you, where you can come back again and again without feeling bored. Hendl Fischer is one of those places for me, where I can spend hours, day after day, winter or summer, feel the vibe and load myself with positive energy. This is a place where I feel like home, because: I enjoy well-prepared dishes, I try fresh new drinks, listen to good music, and admire original places with modern design, overflowing with positive vibes.
We arrived in Leogang, Austria again in early April, right before the closing ski season. We wanted badly to go skiing for a few more days and to enjoy the final snow before embracing spring. Leogang is a wonderful resort, with beautiful wide ski slopes in Salzburg area. It’s part of the Leogang – Saalbach Hinterglemm – Fieberbrunn ski area, a total on 270 km of connected high quality ski slopes. You will need several days to ski on all of them, but it’s definitely worth it.
The easiest access to Hendl Fischerei is a trip with the Asitzbahn aerial tramway from Leogang. We went skiing every day until the afternoon, and we spent the next two hours, before the last ride, here, at Hendl Fischerei; the snow was not good for skiing after 2 p.m., because of the sunshine. We thought we deserve some pampering and chose this perfect place.
I’ll tell you a bit about what kind of goodies I tasted this time and what impressed me most. I found a very interesting, fresh gin based drink (Gin Basil Smash), a cocktail made with gin Tanqueray, lemon, sugar and basil, and a very original lemonade with grapefruit and rosemary. Delicious!
In terms of food, certainly the first place in the top of personal choices was the giant prawns and Saint Jacques Scallops plate, served with Wakame algae, mini-potatoes, cherry tomatoes and a baguette with herbs (Prawns & Scallops – Brettl). The Bouillabaisse “Fischer Tegernseer Art” was also a surprise and delight at the same time, being almost equally good as the prawns and scallops. It is a Provencal fish soup, which originally consisted of the fishermen’s food in Marseille, prepared as soon as they returned from fishing, of the fish and crustaceans they failed to sell at the market. Here, at Hendl Fischer, the soup is made of salmon fillets, prawns, scallops, green clams, Saint Jacques and mackerel fillets, served with a crisp baguette, with a special taste and flavor.
In fact, if I think about it, I find it very difficult to decide which one I liked most; I think it depends on what you feel like on that particular moment. Both dishes are simply delicious and more importantly, very well prepared!
Another dish I tried was a Thai Wagyu-Beef Curry served with wild rice, Sakura Cress, and a thin, crispy garlic baguette, of which I was also , pleasantly surprised. And, of course, the “Gulaschsuppe mit Brot” could not have missed form our lunch table; a goulash soup served with fresh, crispy bread.
I forgot to mention another drink to my liking, which also seemed very interesting to me: Lavendel-Cremant Spritz, made from lavender lemonade, Cremant (a type of sparkling wine made by the same traditional method as the production of champagne), sparkling water and sage. It’s worth trying!
And, of course, no meal is complete without dessert, but this time, I restrained myself form the sweets menu, and just tasted the mango sorbet and the cherry cake (Kirschkuchen). All the desserts here are very good, I already presented you the Priesteregger Cremeschnitte in the first article about Hendl Fischer, but I also recommend the apple, cinnamon and chocolate cake (Schoko-Apfel-Zimt Kuchen). The photo was not the best, though…
I spent quality time yet again at Hendl Fischer with my family and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I love this unique location and I hope that next time we will be able to get here during the White Pearl Mountain Days (this year was 16.03 – 01.04), a complex event, a continuous party with the best sounds, top DJ, great drinks and the finest food.
